Career Coach in Melbourne for Women at Midlife

At this stage of life, career coaching isn’t about starting over or climbing higher. It’s about moving forward with clarity, confidence, and calm — aligning your work with who you’ve become.

I’m Kate James, a career coach in Melbourne, Australia. For over 24 years, I’ve guided thoughtful women through career transitions, helping them understand the patterns that hold them back, rebuild confidence, and make choices that reflect their values, strengths, and ambitions.

What we work on together

  • Clarify your next chapter without starting over

  • Understand the patterns that have shaped your career choices

  • Move from over-functioning to intentional leadership

  • Rebuild confidence in your voice, decisions, and presence

  • Redefine success in a way that reflects who you are now

  • Make courageous career decisions from clarity rather than fear

  • Set boundaries that protect your energy and ambition

  • Explore meaningful pivots, portfolio work, or creative projects

How career coaching works

We begin by gaining clarity on what matters most to you. You’ll complete a short reflection exercise to uncover your priorities, patterns, and aspirations, so we can focus on what truly counts.

Your journey starts with a free introductory call, where we explore your situation and decide together the best path forward.

A standard coaching program usually includes three or five one-hour sessions, scheduled fortnightly, though single sessions are also welcome if you want to begin with a smaller step.

Career coaching with me is designed to be a validating, supportive, and practical experience. Clients often notice:

  • Greater clarity about their next chapter

  • Increased confidence in their decisions and leadership presence

  • Stronger self-awareness and understanding of their patterns

  • Improved focus, communication, and professional relationships

  • A deeper sense of balance and alignment between work and life

Each session is tailored to your needs, helping you make meaningful, practical changes that feel aligned with who you are and who you want to become.

Who career coaching is for

Career coaching at midlife is often right for you if you are:

  • Navigating a career change and wondering what’s next

  • A thoughtful or introverted professional seeking direction

  • Stepping into leadership or considering your next chapter

  • Returning to work after a break

  • Moving toward retirement and seeking purpose and fulfilment

I’ve supported women across a wide range of professions, including lawyers, creatives, psychologists, bankers, consultants, and leaders in not-for-profits and government.

Together, we’ll work on practical strategies and reflective insights that help you move in your chosen direction, rebuild confidence, and trust in your own decisions.

What clients say about Kate’s career coaching

About Kate James

I’m a career coach who is passionate about helping thoughtful women find meaningful work that reflects who they truly are. In my early 30s, I experienced a period of career uncertainty myself. The turning point came when I learned to understand my personal values and strengths — and it transformed how I approached work and life.

Today, I work from home on a small acreage on the Mornington Peninsula with my partner of 40 years. I’m a mother and grandmother, and in my spare time I love walking in nature, paddleboarding, gardening, cooking, and reading.

I’ve been guiding women through career and business transitions for over 24 years. My approach blends psychology, mindfulness, and practical strategy, helping clients gain clarity, confidence, and the courage to make meaningful change.

Frequently asked questions about career coaching

Career coaching is similar to career counselling in that you’ll be supported to find a career that you love. Kate’s coaching sessions offer the opportunity to explore your strengths, your values and consider what you want from the whole of your life so you can choose a role that will feel meaningful to you.

Career counselling sessions typically also include psychometric testing, resume writing and interview coaching too. We offer low-cost strengths testing and we’re very happy to review your resume and support you with interview coaching too.

Kate’s career coaching clients in Melbourne describe her as supportive, compassionate and creative. While Kate is results-driven and she’ll help you work on your goals, her approach is to support you to do things in your own way, rather than push you in any given direction. Her clients describe her as kind, motivating, an excellent listener and someone with a great sense of professional integrity.

People often come to coaching when they’re unclear about direction so I regularly work with clients to support them to find the right role. More often than not, I’ll be helping you to find your own answers rather than specifically advising you about which role you should take.

I do. I work with leaders who want to build self-awareness, overcome imposter syndrome and build their confidence. Learn more about my leadership coaching here.

Not at all. Not everyone we see is interested in mindfulness but it still influences our approach to working with you. Being mindful is really just another way of saying being present, curious, self-aware and non-judgmental. If those qualities appeal, you’ll enjoy working with us. We are not at all dogmatic in our approach and we’re respectful that it might not be everyone’s thing.

Kate’s clients describe her as being down-to-earth, kind and supportive. She’ll work with you to help you find your own answers and her coaching packages are flexible so you won’t be locked into a long-term commitment. In fact, many clients find that they have clarity about the way forward after just a couple of sessions.

With over 23 years experience, Kate works with clients online from all over Australia and offers in-person career coaching appointments for clients in Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. She has coached lawyers, creatives, psychologists, bankers, consultants, technology professionals and leaders from all walks of life. She’ll work with you to help you to move in your chosen direction as well as helping to build your confidence and self-belief.
